Beavis and Butt-Head: This Sucks, Change It!

Client: MTV

Publisher: Pocket Books

Written by: Larry Doyle

When the animated series Beavis and Butt-Head debuted on MTV in March of 1993, it became an instant ratings hit and cultural phenomenon, praised by kids for its edgy humor and catch-phrases but slammed by critics and reviled by parents for the characters’ crude language and self-destructive behavior. Viewers connected with show creator Mike Judge’s slacker duo, however, and demand for Beavis and Butt-Head merchandise sky-rocketed. So we were thrilled when MTV approached us to create a companion book to the series—but we knew it needed to be every bit as irreverent as Beavis and Butt-Head themselves.

A Book for the TV Generation

Described as an “inactivity book” and designed to mimic an illustrated children’s picture book, Beavis and Butt-Head: This Sucks, Change It! comes equipped with a batter-powered toy remote control velcroed to the cover. Each of the remote’s twelve illustrated buttons is keyed to a matching icon inside the book; when the reader presses them, they play different iconic sounds and catch-phrases from the show. (The book also features a running joke warning users not to press a specific button because it will supposedly make Beavis’s head explode.)

A Landmark in Interactive Books

Beavis and Butt-Head: This Sucks, Change It! was an immediate hit with the show’s fans and went on to become a much-sought-after collectible. It also represents one of our first forays into creating interactive, multimedia books that put readers at the center of the action.
