Melcher Media worked closely with Davis and the Rubin’s curatorial staff to design the look and feel of the exhibition, which was meant to call to mind an Eastern temple. Davis’s oversize prints were placed on walls that had been painted with subdued tones of tan and eggplant. The exhibition—the first photographic show ever held at the Rubin and the largest devoted to a living artist—was an overwhelming success.

Photographer Lynn Davis has spent the past twenty years traveling the globe, seeking out and documenting some of the world’s most exalted and visually stunning sites, including Angkor Wat, Kathmandu, Giza, Machu Picchu, Greenland, and the Yangtze River. In 2007, we worked with Davis on a beautiful collection of these dazzling works. Simultaneously, we approached New York’s Rubin Museum of Art, home to a comprehensive collection of art from the Himalayas and surrounding areas, about curating a one-woman exhibition of Davis’s photographs.

Integrating Object and Photography
In order to better integrate the show with the Rubin’s collection, the museum invited Davis to choose a selection of artifacts from its more than 2,000 Himalayan paintings, sculptures, textiles, and prints. Melcher Media worked with her to choose eight objects—all detailed metalwork sculptures—that evoked the same serene spirit and architecture as her photos.
