Hell’s Kitchen: Behind the Dream

Client: Alicia Keys and Foresight Theatrical

Publisher: Plume/Penguin Random House

Written by: Alicia Keys and Lise Funderburg

We teamed up with Alicia Keys and the creative team behind the award-winning Broadway musical Hell’s Kitchen to create a companion book that would be at once a history of the show’s production, a collectible keepsake for fans, and a beautifully designed object that embodies the show’s inspirations. Working closely with Keys and the production team, we crafted Hell’s Kitchen: Behind the Dream: a book that’s as vibrant and energetic as the musical itself.

A New York Story

We conducted extensive interviews with the original cast and crew of Hell’s Kitchen—from Keys herself to director Michael Greif, book writer Kristoffer Diaz, Keys’s longtime music producer, Adam Blackstone, and others—to trace the show’s journey from idea to smash success. Between these insights and never-before-seen photography, Hell’s Kitchen: Behind the Dream gives fans an unprecedented glimpse into the show’s creative process.

Going Behind the Dream

As the ultimate companion to the show, Hell’s Kitchen: Behind the Dream includes the musical’s full libretto, including original songs written for the show. We also included behind-the-scenes details about the music from Keys and her collaborators to make the book feel more special and exclusive for dedicated fans.

In the Empire State of Mind

The book contains deep explorations of the visual and sonic aesthetics of Hell’s Kitchen, which were greatly influenced by the culture, architecture, and people of the Manhattan neighborhood that gives the show its name. To complement this, the package itself pays loving homage to 1990s NYC style.
