The Art and Making of Arcane: League of Legends

By Riot Games

Published by Insight Editions

When Riot Games released Arcane, the animated series captivated audiences with its fluid action sequences and breathtaking visuals. In 2024, we partnered with Riot Games to create The Art and Making of Arcane, the show’s official art book. Working closely with art directors from Riot Games and Fortiche Animation, we translated the series’ unique blend of Art Deco, Art Nouveau, and punk influences onto the page. Featuring concept art, early character designs, and world-building artwork, the book is a comprehensive tribute to the vision and creative process behind Arcane.

A Book from the World of Arcane

Readers are immersed in the steampunk worlds of Piltover and Zaun. The interior design incorporates collage and multilayered overlays, borrowing from punk and Victorian aesthetics, making the book feel both contemporary and antique—just like the world of Arcane. Exclusive ephemera deepen readers’ connection to the universe with in-world items like graffiti stencils, booklets, blueprints, maps, and posters tucked between the pages. Artists at Fortiche also applied graffiti tags throughout the book to make it feel as though Jinx, a protagonist of the series, had defaced the book herself.

Behind the Keyframes

We photographed and documented the animators and artists behind Arcane as they worked on the show’s second season, breaking down their technique of combining 2D and 3D animation with matte paintings. Readers receive an insider’s look at the sketches, storyboards, and keyframes behind the show’s gorgeous vistas and fight scenes.
